- He admitted to hitting the woman twice on the head, claiming he did not intend to kill her
A 20-year-old man, Friday Akinmade, has been arrested by the Ondo State Security Network, also known as Amotekun, for allegedly killing a 65-year-old woman in Owo, Ondo State.
The suspect reportedly struck the elderly woman with a stick after accusing her of stealing ₦3,000 from him.
Speaking to journalists at Amotekun’s headquarters in Akure, Akinmade admitted to hitting the woman twice on the head, claiming he did not intend to kill her.
Akinmade said that after confronting the woman about the alleged theft, she tried to flee. He is now in custody and was paraded alongside 26 other suspects involved in crimes ranging from kidnapping and burglary to attempted murder.
Commander of the Amotekun Corps, Akogun Adetunji Adeleye, who led the parade, outlined the various offences committed by the suspects. Among them was a 42-year-old man who attacked Amotekun officers, a 21-year-old involved in attempted murder, and a 30-year-old accused of cultism and assaulting law enforcement officers.
Adeleye noted that, despite these incidents, Ondo State remains largely peaceful, with the exception of a few kidnapping cases near the borders with Kogi and Edo States. He praised the Amotekun rangers for ensuring safety in the state’s forest reserves, encouraging farmers to return to their farms.
However, he expressed concern over a rise in house burglaries, attributing the increase to the country’s current economic challenges.
