Nigeria and several West African nations are set to introduce a unified driver’s license and vehicle registration system as part of a regional push to streamline transportation and improve road safety.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) is working alongside the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) through the West African Road Safety Organisation (WARSO) to establish the Regional Vehicle Administration and Information System.
Speaking at a workshop in Abuja, FRSC Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed, represented by Deputy Corps Marshal Clement Oladele, said the initiative aims to standardise driver’s licenses, vehicle number plates, and documentation across the region.
“The scheme will promote the seamless movement of vehicles, people, goods, and services across ECOWAS countries,” he said, adding that the system would also help prevent multiple registrations and reduce vehicle theft in the subregion.
The FRSC is working with ECOWAS and WARSO to introduce digital number plates and vehicle documentation. The plan includes using durable, weather-resistant materials and linking driver’s licenses to holders’ bank accounts, enabling integration with digital payment systems.
The new system is designed to enhance cross-border transportation and improve enforcement of traffic regulations across West Africa.
