- The governor explained that the budget is aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
The Governors of Cross River and Ekiti States have become the first to present their 2025 fiscal year budgets to their respective state houses of assembly.
On Tuesday, Cross River State Governor, Senator Bassey Otu, proposed a N498 billion budget for the state, while Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, presented a N375.79 billion budget for consideration.
Governor Otu christened Cross River’s 2025 budget as the “Sustainable Growth Budget.” He disclosed that 66% of the budget, amounting to N328 billion, is earmarked for capital expenditure, while 34%, or N170 billion, is allocated for recurrent expenditure.
The governor explained that the budget is aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goals 2, 3, 4, 9, and 16, which focus on areas such as zero hunger, good health, quality education, industry and innovation, and strong institutions.
“The 2025 budget is benchmarked for the Sustainable Development Goals, ensuring continuity for ongoing projects and programmes,” Otu said. He emphasised that the budget reflects the voices of Cross Riverians, shaped by wide consultations.
The governor highlighted that the budget is designed to address economic challenges resulting from the removal of the petrol subsidy and the unification of the exchange rate. It prioritises the agricultural sector with provisions for incentives, seedlings, and machinery to enhance food security.
Meanwhile, in Ekiti State, Governor Oyebanji also presented his N375.79 billion budget proposal to the state assembly, marking another step in preparations for the 2025 fiscal year.
These developments come ahead of Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni’s planned presentation of the 2025 budget, scheduled for later this month.
