- Drivers without the necessary clearance will no longer be permitted to operate within the FCT
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, announced that starting January 2025, all commercial drivers in Abuja will be required to obtain security clearance from the Nigerian Police Force (NPF) and the Department of State Services (DSS).
Speaking at the FCT Renewed Hope Youth Empowerment programme, Wike explained that the measure aims to improve security and address concerns such as kidnapping and “one-chance” robberies. Drivers without the necessary clearance will no longer be permitted to operate within the FCT.
Wike expressed concern about the involvement of some transport operators in criminal activities, stating, “Most of the Keke Napep [tricycles] and motorcycles are informants.” He emphasized that the new regulations will require drivers to display the approved Abuja colour scheme, with identifiable vehicle numbers linked to registered drivers to enhance passenger safety.
In addition, the minister distributed new cars to participants in the FCT taxi scheme to support safer transportation in the city.
