- In response, Chad launched an airstrike on Tilma island in Nigeria’s Lake Chad region, mistakenly targeting fishermen
Chad’s military has been accused of killing scores of Nigerian fishermen while targeting jihadists, following a deadly Boko Haram attack on a Chadian military base.
Last Sunday, Boko Haram attacked a military base in Chad, killing around 40 people.
In response, Chad launched an airstrike on Tilma island in Nigeria’s Lake Chad region, mistakenly targeting fishermen.
Eyewitnesses describe chaos as fishermen fled in all directions during the bombing. Many bodies remain scattered across Tilma, with some taken to a military base in Mile 4.
Fishermen and anti-jihadist militia claim the airstrike was a case of mistaken identity. A Chadian general staff officer acknowledged difficulty distinguishing between civilians and terrorists.
This incident highlights escalating tensions in the region.
