The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has expressed gratitude to security agencies for securing the release of Dr. Ganiyat Popoola and her nephew, Folaranmi Abdul-Mugniy, who were kidnapped 10 months ago.
Dr. Popoola, a registrar at the National Eye Centre in Kaduna State, was abducted along with her husband, Nurudeen Popoola, a squadron leader, and her nephew on December 27, 2023.
After negotiations, the husband was released on March 8, 2024.
The ministry’s statement, signed by Alaba Balogun, Head of Information and Public Relations, acknowledged the relief this brings to the healthcare community, which has shown remarkable resilience and unity.
The ministry thanked the Defence Headquarters, dedicated troops, and military personnel for their commitment to safeguarding citizens. Appreciation was also extended to medical associations and professional bodies for their advocacy and encouragement, which has boosted healthcare workers’ morale across Nigeria.
The ministry reaffirmed its commitment to protecting medical professionals, honoring their bravery and dedication, and working closely with security agencies to ensure a safe environment.
