JUST-IN: 76 protesters face charges as minors collapse in court amid #EndBadGovernance hearing

The nationwide protest against economic hardship and “bad governance” lasted from August 1–10.

A dramatic scene unfolded at a federal high court in Abuja on Friday as minors allegedly linked to the #EndBadGovernance protests collapsed while awaiting arraignment.

The court had scheduled the hearing for that day, but proceedings took a chaotic turn when some of the children, appearing unwell and undernourished, were summoned to enter their pleas.

With limited space in the dock, some stood outside, but the situation escalated as four children suddenly collapsed, writhing in pain, prompting Judge Obiora Egwuatu to abruptly adjourn proceedings until calm was restored.

Upon resuming, the prosecution successfully requested that the four ailing children’s names be struck from the charges, allowing the arraignment of the remaining defendants to proceed.

These 76 individuals, arrested across various states including Abuja, Kaduna, Gombe, Jos, Katsina, and Kano, face accusations of treason and other serious offenses.

Following the protests, the police announced the arrest of alleged perpetrators in some states.

On September 2, ten protesters were arraigned before Emeka Nwite, an Abuja federal high court judge.

The Jigawa state government said it has prosecuted 403 persons in connection with the protest.
