2027 general elections contest between APC, Nigerians — Gov Makinde

Makinde Frames 2027 Election as People's Choice, Calls for PDP Unity

Seyi Makinde

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has described the 2027 election as a critical moment for Nigeria, framing it as a choice between the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Nigerian people.

Makinde made these remarks on Saturday during the opening of the new ultra-modern Southwest zonal secretariat for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ibadan, Oyo State. The secretariat was dedicated to the late Soji Adagunodo, former PDP Southwest Chairman.

Makinde criticized the APC’s governance, asserting it has not met the people’s expectations. “The APC has failed us. Nigerians must decide if they will keep APC in power or demand change,” he stated.

He emphasized the urgency for action, pointing out that Nigerians are enduring hardships and calling for unity to bring about change.

He also stressed that the 2027 election is not just a contest between the APC and PDP, but a referendum on APC’s governance.

Makinde urged the PDP to resolve internal conflicts, identifying the party’s “enemies within” as a greater threat than opposition parties. “We must maintain peace in the Southwest. We can’t let the ruling party undermine our built harmony,” he said.

Addressing his potential presidential aspirations, Makinde hinted that the country’s current situation would shape his decision: “I am old enough to make my own choices, and Nigeria’s realities will guide me.”

Meanwhile, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke called for introspection within the PDP, emphasizing unity as the key to overcoming challenges. “We need honest conversations to move forward together,” Adeleke said, reminding members of the party’s core mission of serving the people and upholding democracy.

The event’s attendees, including PDP’s acting National Chairman, Ambassador Illiya Damagum, praised the work of PDP governors, saying they “embody the values of the party.”

Zonal Chairman Bar. Kamorudeen Ajisafe, represented by Hon. Rahman Owokoniran, also highlighted the importance of PDP’s collective strength in the push to unseat the ruling party in 2027.

The inauguration was attended by prominent PDP figures such as former Governors Olagunsoye Oyinlola, Okezie Ikpeazu, Samuel Ortom, and several senators and local representatives.

The gathering underscored the unity and strength of the PDP in the Southwest as they prepare for the upcoming election season.
