Abia: Irate villagers demolish house of man who shot dead youth for playing football


In Abia State, a throng of exasperated villagers have pulled down the family house of a murder suspect, Mr Stephen Irobunda.

The house, located in Ohokobe Ndume Umuahia, was demolished on Tuesday by youths of the community, to avenge the death of one Bright Odizuru who was shot dead by Irobunda.

The suspect, who is about 70 years, shot dead Odizuru whom he accused of playing football in front of his house on Saturday and is presently detained by the Police at State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID).

The suspect had initially fired shots in the air to scare away the youths but the angry youths went to Irobunda to confront him on why he was intimidating them with gunshots, during the confrontation Irobunda shot the deceased in the stomach and he later died at the hospital.

Enraged by the action of Irobunda, other youths pounced on him and was on the verge of lynching him when security operatives waded in and rescued the suspect from the blood-baying irate youths.

When journalists arrived at the scene of the demolition at 10: am, the building had become a pile of rubble even as other destroyed property of the suspect were indiscriminately thrown out along the Umuahia-Ikot Ekpene road.

Some of the youths were seen sounding the community gong in solidarity while others were seen lamenting the death of the victim.

The killing of the youth, whose maternal home is Ohokobe, created tension in the neighborhood on Saturday, even as Abia State Police Command said that the matter is being investigated at SCID, Umuahia
