The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, emphasized the critical role of technology in telecommunications as a driver of economic advancement and globalization.

Speaking at the 2024 National Workshop for Justices and Judges on legal issues in telecommunications, organized by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the National Judicial Institute (NJI) in Abuja and Lagos, she noted the importance of enhancing judicial officers’ knowledge on emerging telecommunications issues.

Kekere-Ekun described this year’s theme, “The role of the judiciary in accelerating digital transformation in Nigeria,” as timely, highlighting the increasing risks of personal data misuse and the need for better consumer protection strategies. She linked deficiencies in the banking sector to its reliance on telecommunications, stressing the challenges of cybersecurity and electronically backed transactions that often lead to disputes requiring judicial resolution.

The CJN expressed hope that the workshop would facilitate discussions on current telecommunications challenges and equip judicial officers with the technical skills needed for effective adjudication. She commended the NCC for its efforts in protecting consumers from unfair practices, reaffirming the judiciary’s commitment to supporting the telecommunications sector’s development and ensuring transparency in legal processes.
