- Ogun State Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, emphasized the importance of quality and safety inspections for CNG-powered vehicles and refueling stations during a three-day workshop in Abeokuta
The Ogun State government has intensified efforts to reduce emissions and foster a sustainable, eco-friendly environment by initiating the conversion of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) vehicles to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered alternatives.
The government is working closely with key stakeholders to ensure the process is smooth and safe.
Ogun State Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, emphasized the importance of quality and safety inspections for CNG-powered vehicles and refueling stations during a three-day workshop in Abeokuta. The workshop, organized in collaboration with the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), focused on the application of Nigerian industrial standards.
Oresanya highlighted that the state is working with other relevant Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), including the Ministry of Transportation and Fire Services, to ensure a comprehensive approach to safety. He revealed that recent audits by the Ministry and the Ogun State Environmental Protection Agency (OGEPA) uncovered significant safety gaps, contributing to fire incidents earlier in the year.
To address these challenges, the state has set up a safety desk to oversee the manufacture, distribution, and handling of gases. The initiative will regulate gas handlers across commercial and industrial sectors.
Oresanya urged all stakeholders to strictly adhere to safety standards to protect the health and welfare of Ogun State communities.
Commissioner for Transportation, Gbenga Dairo, voiced the administration’s commitment to supporting the initiative, citing its economic and environmental benefits. He also stressed the need for rigorous enforcement to ensure the success of the program.
