The Zamfara State government has expressed concern over the plight of students sponsored to Cyprus International University under the administration of former Governor Bello Mohammed Matawalle.

Speaking at a press conference in Abuja, the state’s Commissioner for Education, Science, and Technology, Mallam Wadatau Madawaki, detailed the challenges faced by the 93 Zamfara indigenes sent to study at the university since 2020.

Madawaki criticised the handling of the scholarship scheme, highlighting a lack of transparency and accountability. He revealed that the previous administration failed to sign a formal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the university, leading to confusion over the responsibilities of both parties. “There is no documented agreement outlining the state government’s obligations or the services the university was to provide,” Madawaki said.

The commissioner also pointed out that students were charged for meals they did not receive, adding to their hardships. In response, the administration of Governor Dauda Lawal has taken steps to address the situation, including paying N84.7 million to cover outstanding tuition fees and releasing N30.9 million for student accommodation.

Despite these efforts, discrepancies in student billing and deportation threats have persisted. A delegation sent to Cyprus uncovered further issues, and the Nigerian Embassy is now involved in addressing these concerns with Cyprus authorities. The state government is working to resolve the students’ challenges and ensure their welfare.
