Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has approved the release of 55 inmates from various correctional facilities across the state.

The decision follows recommendations from the Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy.

A statement issued by the state’s Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Lawal Pedro, revealed that 40 inmates are to be released immediately, while the remaining will serve additional terms ranging from three to six months before their release.

Pedro explained that the governor’s decision is an exercise of his powers under Section 212 of the 1999 Constitution and aligns with ongoing efforts to decongest correctional facilities as part of broader justice sector reforms in Lagos State.

The release process will be completed following administrative procedures at the correctional facilities.
