The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and other university-based unions will meet the reconstituted renegotiation committee on the 2009 agreement.
ASUU’s National President, Emmanuel Osodeke, confirmed this in an Abuja interview.
Osodeke didn’t specify the meeting date but noted it would happen soon to discuss key issues.
In October, the Federal Government reconstituted the committee, giving it three months.
This is the fourth renegotiation committee since 2017, following previous ones led by Wale Babalakin, Munzali Jubril, and Nimi Briggs.
ASUU’s 2020 nine-month strike led to Prof. Munzali Jubril’s committee, producing a draft agreement.
The Nimi Briggs Committee submitted a draft agreement on June 16, 2022.
After ASUU’s recent ultimatum, the Ministry of Education formed another committee.
At the inauguration, former Minister Tahir Mamman said, “In the composition of this important Committee… exceptionally experienced… transparent.”
Osodeke stated, “The Committee hasn’t been dismantled, we are meeting next week… We hope something good will come out of it.”
Meanwhile, the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) will meet next week.
SSANU President Mohammed Ibrahim announced this while briefing Abuja journalists.
The meeting, themed “Respecting Collective Bargaining Agreement and Industrial Peace in a Democracy,” will revisit withheld salaries and allowances.
Ibrahim said, “Specifically… outstanding 3 months’ withheld salaries, N50bn earned allowances, arrears… wage award.”
The conference will also kickstart SSANU’s electoral process for new leadership.
