- The President of ASUU, Prof Emmanuel Osodeke, while speaking, stressed that university leaders must fight for themselves and not rely on others to negotiate their future.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has advocated for utilizing accumulated unspent funds allocated to tertiary education.
ASUU warned that failing to tap into these resources may hinder growth and development in tertiary institutions.
The call follows a strategic meeting between Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) and stakeholders.
At the Abuja gathering, TETFund Executive Secretary, Mr. Sonny Echono, described the engagement as a new chapter.
He stated, “With the recent increase in the education tax from 2.5 percent to 3 percent, TETFund is poised for even greater impact, improving infrastructure, academic programs, and accessibility for all students.”
Echono emphasised the crucial role of beneficiary institutions’ heads in shaping TETFund’s direction.
TETFund aimed to empower human capital, addressing the need for skilled professionals.
Originally established as Education Tax Fund in 1993, TETFund transformed in 2011.
The 2023 education tax increase to 3%, authorized by President Bola Tinubu, significantly bolsters TETFund.
Echono urged stakeholders to forge partnerships and explore innovative industry connections.
ASUU President, Prof Emmanuel Osodeke, stressed that university leaders must take charge of their future.
Osodeke warned that proposed tax changes to TETFund could severely impact university funding.
He emphasised the need to prevent these bills from passing to protect Nigeria’s education system.
