Court sentences tricycle rider to six months in jail for smoking Indian hemp

...the court said that the judgment would serve as a deterrent

A Jos Magistrates’ Court delivered its verdict on Tuesday, handing down a six-month prison term to Mathew Sunday, 32, for publicly smoking substances.

The Magistrate, Shawomi Bokkos, conducted a summary trial and pronounced the sentence after Sunday pleaded guilty.

Bokkos ruled that Sunday could opt for a N30,000 fine instead of imprisonment, emphasizing that the judgment would deter potential offenders.

Earlier, Prosecutor Insp. Ijuptil Thlawur presented the case, stating it was reported at the “A” Division Police station on August 17.

Thlawur explained that Abdul Usman, a vigilante member, filed the report after catching Sunday smoking the substance behind a house.

According to the police, Sunday’s actions violated the Plateau State Penal Code Law.
