  • Nigerian government vows to eradicate Lakurawa terror group, deploying additional troops and equipment to affected areas in Sokoto and Kebbi
  • Defence Minister Abubakar assures strategic plans are in place to end Lakurawa’s activities, citing military leadership’s coordinated response

The Nigerian federal government has announced its commitment to eradicating Lakurawa, a new terror group responsible for recent violent incidents in Sokoto and Kebbi states in Northwestern Nigeria.

The group has conducted deadly attacks, including the killing of 15 people and the rustling of over 100 cows in Mera, Augie Local Government Area of Kebbi State.

In an interview with BBC Hausa, Minister of Defence Mohammed Badaru Abubakar stated that the government is deploying additional equipment and troops to contain the situation.

He assured that high-ranking military officials, including the acting Chief of Army Staff, Christopher Musa, and the Chiefs of Defence, Naval, and Air Staff, have mapped out a strategic plan to end the activities of the Lakurawa group.

“The acting Chief of Army Staff has visited the affected areas and held discussions with other service chiefs on strategies to dismantle the group,” said Abubakar. “They have put together a comprehensive plan, including the provision of more equipment and reinforcement of troops, to bring an end to these attacks.”

He acknowledged that while the military has made significant strides in improving security over the past year, new tactics employed by terror groups require ongoing strategy adjustments.

The Defence Minister expressed confidence in the planned military response and encouraged citizens to continue praying for peace.

The Defence Ministry’s coordinated response aims to contain the threat and prevent the spread of violence to other areas, reinforcing the government’s commitment to addressing Nigeria’s security challenges.
