- Police patrol teams transported Akinbami to Ijaiye General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead
Gunmen suspected to be cultists have killed a former councillor of Abeokuta North Local Government Area, Mutiu Akinbami, in the Ogun State capital.
The attack occurred on Friday evening near Brewery Bus Stop, Abeokuta, while Akinbami, popularly known as Egor, was riding a motorcycle with his son.
Eyewitnesses reported that the assailants, travelling in a white tinted Toyota Hilux, pursued Akinbami from his home in the Olomoore Federal Housing Estate before opening fire. “They shot him in the head,” a source said on condition of anonymity.
The state police command confirmed the incident on Saturday. Spokesperson SP Omolola Odutola said, “The Divisional Police Officer of Lafenwa received a report at about 6:40 pm that Mutiu Akinbami was shot near the Brewery while on a motorcycle. The attackers, masked and in an unregistered vehicle, shot him from behind.”
Police patrol teams transported Akinbami to Ijaiye General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Preliminary investigations suggest Akinbami was a known member of the Eiye confraternity and had previously held a leadership position at the Federal College of Education, Osiele, Abeokuta. Police disclosed that he had been on a wanted list before his death.
Arrests have reportedly been made as investigations continue.
This killing follows the death of Adeleke Adeyinka, an All Progressives Congress councillorship candidate for Abeokuta South Local Government, who was also murdered by suspected cultists last month.
