The Nigerian government has requested a $1m grant from the African Development Bank (AfDB) to provide food aid for communities devastated by the 2024 floods.
The disaster displaced over 200,000 people, destroyed 500,000 hectares of farmland across 29 states, and triggered outbreaks of diarrhoea and malaria.
The proposal seeks to assist over 122,000 individuals in 16 worst-hit districts with food packages of 25kg of rice and 10kg of beans per household between October 2024 and February 2025.
The aid complements earlier government efforts, including the distribution of rice and spaghetti to affected families.
Funds from the AfDB’s Special Relief Fund will be disbursed through the World Food Programme (WFP), which will oversee procurement and distribution.
Rising food prices have rendered cash-based assistance impractical, making direct food transfers vital for stabilising food security and protecting livelihoods.
President Bola Tinubu had earlier appealed for global support, describing the situation as beyond local capacity. Monitoring will assess the intervention’s impact on recipients, offering a lifeline to those affected by one of Nigeria’s worst floods.
