- He noted that Africa’s vulnerability stems from disunity
The President of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Dr Mohamed Ibn Chambas, has identified external interference from former colonial powers as a key driver of Africa’s political instability.
Speaking at the 13th Zik Annual Lecture Series on Saturday at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Chambas called for African unity in security and socio-economic development to counteract escalating restiveness and external influence.
He noted that Africa’s vulnerability stems from disunity, which perpetuates underdevelopment and instability. Chambas said, “The great Zik of Africa made it clear that without unity, Africa would remain vulnerable to political instability and external intervention. Agitations, fuelled by poverty, unemployment, corruption, and insecurity, reflect the erosion of trust in leadership.”
Enugu State Governor Dr Peter Mbah, who chaired the event, urged African leaders to foster stronger bilateral ties and reduce reliance on foreign powers.
The Anambra State Deputy Governor, Dr Onyekachukwu Ibezim, representing Governor Charles Soludo, highlighted how Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe’s governance principles continue to influence the state.
Prof. Uche Azikiwe, the late leader’s wife, applauded the organisers and called for the publication of a compendium of past lectures in honour of her husband.
The Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Prof. Benard Odoh, described the lecture series as a pivotal platform for addressing Africa’s socio-political and economic challenges.
