- The Senate urged the Nigerian military to take decisive action against the Lakurawa terrorist group infiltrating from Mali and Burkina Faso
- Recent attacks by Lakurawa in Kebbi State resulted in about 20 fatalities, prompting calls for enhanced military vigilance and early warning systems
The Senate has called on the Nigerian military to take decisive action against a terrorist group known as Lakurawa, reportedly infiltrating the country from Mali and Burkina Faso.
This resolution followed a motion presented on Wednesday by Senator Yahaya Abdullahi (PDP, Kebbi North), with co-sponsors Senators Adamu Aliero (PDP, Kebbi Central) and Garba Musa Maidoki (PDP, Kebbi South).
The motion came after the recent attack by the armed group in Mera town, Augie Local Government Area of Kebbi State, where about 20 people were killed.
Senator Abdullahi explained that the group entered Nigeria through the Nigeria-Niger border areas of Illela, Tangaza, and Silame in Sokoto State. From there, they attacked communities in Kebbi’s Augie and Arewa LGAs.
“These terrorists are invaders from Mali and Burkina Faso,” Abdullahi said. “They pose a significant threat to national security.”
Senator Aliero added, “These terrorists are equipped with highly sophisticated weapons. They control northern Mali and are now attacking Kebbi, Sokoto, Kaduna, Niger, and other states. The time to act is now. We must address this threat immediately.”
Following a heated debate, the Senate urged the military to implement early warning systems to prevent further incursions. It also called for heightened vigilance and a sustained military presence in the affected areas to protect communities from further attacks.
