The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has taken stern action against 13 schools in Kogi State and blacklisted 14 supervisors for involvement in exam malpractice during the 2023/2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
This decision reflects WAEC’s commitment to preserving the integrity of its examinations and ensuring a level playing field for all candidates.
Kogi State’s Commissioner for Education, Mr. Wemi Jones, announced the development during a meeting with affected principals and supervisors.
He stated that the government is determined to hold accountable all individuals and institutions implicated in these acts.
“Examination malpractice is a criminal offence, and those involved will face legal consequences under the Kogi State Education Law and Other Matters Connected Therewith, 2020,” Jones stated.
He revealed that a committee, led by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, will investigate those indicted and ensure that offenders are prosecuted in court.
Jones also highlighted the state government’s significant investment in education, emphasizing that such misconduct undermines the progress made in the sector.
“The era of allowing bad eggs to tarnish the gains in education is over,” he added.
Dr. Seidu Jibrin, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, also addressed the gathering, urging educators to abandon malpractice. He described the acts as not only harmful to the state’s reputation but also detrimental to the students’ future.
He assured that anyone found guilty would face severe sanctions.
“I urge you to have a sober reflection of your actions as posterity will judge everyone according to his/her deeds. While some teachers are being called out for awards, it will be wrong for you to be called out for condemnations. It is unfortunate that this is happening when Kogi State is investing so much in Education. Whosoever is found culpable will be severely sanctioned,” Jibrin said.
