The Anambra State Internal Revenue Service (AIRS) has held the first edition of its Schools Tax Competition, engaging private secondary schools across the state to raise awareness about the importance of tax payment.
The month-long event, titled “The Tax Talk Show”, aimed to instil financial literacy and a sense of civic responsibility among students.
Themed “Increasing Tax Awareness in Tomorrow’s Leaders”, the programme sought to educate students on the role of taxation in societal development.
Speaking at the grand finale in Awka on Thursday, Anambra Governor Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, represented by his Chief of Staff, Ernest Ezeajughi, urged residents to embrace tax payment as a civic duty. He reassured them that taxes would be used transparently to achieve his administration’s vision of a livable and prosperous state.
“The competition highlights the importance of financial literacy and the role of young minds in shaping the economy,” the governor said. “It is not just a contest but an educational platform that empowers students with knowledge about taxation, finance, and economics. We encourage participants to share what they’ve learned with their families and communities.”
Chief Greg Ezeilo, CEO of AIRS, reiterated the agency’s commitment to promoting tax awareness through campaigns involving various stakeholders, including schools.
The competition underscores the state’s efforts to foster a culture of tax compliance while empowering the next generation with financial and civic knowledge.
