EU Praises Enugu State for Leading Solar-for-Health Initiative

Peter Mbah

The European Union (EU) has commended Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State for making the state the first to embrace the Nigeria Solar-for-Health Project (NISHP).

The NISHP, an EU-led initiative, aims to provide 24-hour access to clean, efficient, and reliable energy in public healthcare facilities across Nigeria.

During a visit to the Government House in Enugu, Inga Stefanowicz, Head of the Green and Digital Economy Section at the EU Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS, praised the state’s proactive involvement. The visit coincided with the official launch of the NISHP in Enugu.

Stefanowicz highlighted the project’s significance, stating, “It primarily addresses public health services while incorporating innovative collaborations with the private sector. This program is a benchmark for power sector development in Nigeria, addressing the entire energy ecosystem and engaging key stakeholders.”

Governor Mbah emphasized that human capital development has been a key focus of his administration.

“Providing basic social services and amenities has been our priority since taking office. The opportunity to utilize renewable energy was compelling, and we wasted no time in committing to it when the proposal was presented,” Mbah said.

The EU’s acknowledgement underscores the importance of renewable energy initiatives in enhancing public healthcare services and advancing sustainable development in Nigeria.
