- Former President Olusegun Obasanjo faced backlash for criticizing Nigeria’s leadership, with Laolu Akande urging him to focus on constructive solutions
- Akande argued that Nigeria’s challenges stem from deeper leadership issues, suggesting former leaders should avoid mocking their successors
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has been criticized for his recent criticisms of Nigeria’s leadership. Laolu Akande, a former spokesman for ex-Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, urges him to lead by example.
The backlash follows Obasanjo’s remarks at the Chinua Achebe Leadership Forum at Yale University, where he painted a grim picture of Nigeria’s state.
Describing the nation as “failing,” Obasanjo cited corruption, immorality, and mediocrity as root causes of the country’s ongoing challenges.
“Nigeria’s situation is bad,” Obasanjo stated. “The more the immorality and corruption of a nation, the more it sinks into chaos, insecurity, conflict, division, youth restiveness, and underdevelopment.”
Reacting to these comments, Akande took to X (formerly Twitter) to criticize Obasanjo’s approach, suggesting that former presidents should avoid mocking their successors. He argued that Nigeria’s issues go beyond individual administrations and are tied to a deeper leadership crisis.
“Nigeria faces significant political leadership challenges,” Akande wrote. “But the bigger issue is the deeper problem that produces these challenges. Like General Obasanjo, former leaders should focus on constructive solutions rather than ridiculing others.”
Akande’s remarks reflect growing criticism of Obasanjo’s outspoken style, with many urging the former president to set an example of unity and positive engagement.
The debate underscores Nigeria’s broader challenges in addressing its leadership and governance issues.
