- The initiative aims to improve school maintenance and is set to benefit principals across all 23 local government areas starting January 2025
Governor Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto State has introduced a monthly maintenance allowance of N200,000 for secondary school principals across the state.
The announcement was made on Monday during the Sokoto State 2025 citizens’ budget discussion. This initiative addresses an appeal by the former deputy governor, Chiso Abdullahi, who called for financial support to help principals manage urgent maintenance tasks.
Abdullahi emphasized the importance of these funds for small repairs requiring carpenters, masons, and similar workers.
Chief Press Secretary Abubakar Bawa, speaking on behalf of the governor, confirmed that the allowance would benefit principals in all 23 local government areas. He added that disbursement is set to begin in January 2025.
“The governor, as always, is committed to improving education. This fund will ensure better maintenance of secondary schools,” Bawa stated.
In addition, Governor Aliyu directed the Commissioner for Local Government Affairs, Dadi Adare, to review traditional rulers’ allowances. This review aims to align the payments with current economic realities.
The directive followed a request by the District Head of Kilgori, Muhammad Jabbi Kilgori, who represented the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar. Kilgori urged the state to increase allowances for traditional rulers to match rising costs.
The measures reflect the government’s effort to effectively address educational and traditional governance challenges.
