- The Federal Government, Delta State, and private investors will collaborate to complete the Okpai Power Plant, enhancing electricity supply
- Senator Ned Nwoko announced ongoing discussions for funding the project, emphasizing its importance in addressing electricity issues in Delta North
The Federal Government, private investors, and the Delta State Government are set to collaborate on completing the Okpai Power Plant project to enhance electricity supply in Kwale and the Delta North Senatorial District.
Senator Ned Nwoko disclosed this during a courtesy visit to the Asagba of Asaba, Obi Prof. Epiphany Azinge, stating that advanced discussions were ongoing with the Minister of Budget and National Planning to secure funding for the project’s step-down initiative.
“We are making progress with the Federal Government to ensure this step-down project is completed. This initiative will address electricity issues in Delta North and beyond,” Senator Nwoko said.
Located in Ndokwa East Local Government Area, the Okpai Power Plant recently expanded its capacity to 980 megawatts. However, it has yet to supply electricity to its host communities, which Senator Nwoko called unacceptable.
“This power plant, commissioned by President Olusegun Obasanjo in 2005, was intended to serve Delta North. It is time we ensure it fulfills that purpose,” he emphasized.
Senator Nwoko explained that private financiers are ready to fund the project, requiring only guarantees to recover their investments over 20 to 24 years.
“Once those guarantees are in place, the projects will proceed,” he assured.
The Asagba of Asaba commended Senator Nwoko’s efforts and pledged the traditional institution’s support in ensuring the project’s successful implementation.
This partnership between the Federal Government, private investors, and Delta State signals a significant step towards addressing the region’s electricity challenges and boosting socio-economic development.
