- He also reiterated his commitment to national service over partisan politics
Elder statesman and former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (Retd.), has called on northern elites to focus on causes that serve the collective interest of Nigeria, rather than narrow regional concerns.
Gowon made this call on Wednesday while hosting a delegation from the Senator Ibrahim Shekarau-led League of Northern Democrats (LND) at the Yakubu Gowon Centre in Abuja. He stressed the importance of unity and collaboration across Nigeria’s diverse regions.
“The north must ensure that its actions are in the best interest of Nigeria,” Gowon stated, reflecting on his support for state creation during his time as Head of State. He explained that the move was aimed at addressing regional fears of domination and fostering unity.
Recalling the challenges of maintaining national unity during his tenure, Gowon said, “The fear of disintegration was palpable across all regions,” adding that his decision to advocate for state creation was meant to ensure a balanced federation.
He also reiterated his commitment to national service over partisan politics, stating, “My allegiance has always been to Nigeria. Differences in opinion should never hinder us from working together for the nation’s good.”
Gowon concluded by urging Nigerians to embrace the country’s diversity as a strength and work towards collective development.
