- The Nigerian government has handed over 15 CNG-powered buses to transport unions, aiming to transition to cleaner energy post-fuel subsidy removal
- Minister Senator Alkali emphasized the initiative’s role in utilizing natural resources and reducing economic burdens while promoting sustainable transportation
The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially handed over 15 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered buses to major transport unions as part of efforts to mitigate the impact of the removal of fuel subsidies and transition to cleaner energy.
The buses’ recipients, announced during a handover ceremony in Abuja, include the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), and the National Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO).
At the event, Minister of Transportation, Senator Said Alkali, described the initiative as a critical step in alleviating economic burdens and utilizing Nigeria’s natural resources to benefit its citizens.
Senator Alkali emphasized that the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative represents a pivotal shift in Nigeria’s economic strategy.
“The scheme reflects our commitment to transitioning from exporting raw materials to using our resources to empower Nigerians. For too long, we’ve exported crude oil and other materials only to import their finished products at higher costs. This cycle must end,” the minister stated.
He highlighted natural gas’s potential to transform Nigeria’s economy, drawing comparisons with countries like Japan, which have used gas to revolutionize their transportation sector and industrial output.
Programme Director of the Presidential CNG Initiative, Mr. Michael Oluwagbemi, announced that Federal Capital Territory (FCT) residents would enjoy free transportation on the CNG buses for the next 40 days.
“After this initial period, commuters will benefit from discounted fares, ensuring that the initiative provides long-term relief and economic benefits,” Oluwagbemi said.
He also highlighted the safety and reliability of the CNG-powered buses, which are expected to serve as a model for sustainable transportation in the country.
This initiative is part of broader government efforts to harness Nigeria’s gas resources for domestic use, reduce dependence on petrol, and create a cleaner and more efficient transportation system.
