  • The NLC had set a deadline of Sunday midnight for the strike to commence if the state government fails to implement the N70,000 minimum wage

Labour unions in Cross River State have expressed readiness to join the nationwide industrial action proposed by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) over the non-implementation of the new minimum wage.

State Chairperson of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Monday Ogbodum, confirmed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Calabar on Saturday.

The NLC had set a deadline of Sunday midnight for the strike to commence if the state government fails to implement the N70,000 minimum wage.

“Except the Cross River State Government implements the new wage regime, there will be no going back on the industrial action,” said Ogbodum.

He acknowledged ongoing negotiations with the state government, including meetings held on Thursday, Friday, and another scheduled for Saturday. However, he maintained that discussions alone would not prevent the unions from proceeding with the strike.

“Our position is that even if we sign any document or agreement today, that does not still amount to implementation,” Ogbodum said, adding that the government had shown some level of seriousness but progress was insufficient.

The unions’ stance aligns with the NLC’s nationwide demand for the immediate enforcement of the new minimum wage to address the economic challenges faced by workers.
