The Katsina State Government has signed a landmark agreement with Ocean Solutions Energie to boost access to sustainable electricity.

Governor Dikko Radda formalised the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Sunday in Paris alongside Dr Hafiz Ahmed, his Special Adviser on Power and Energy. Ocean Solutions Energie, a French renewable energy firm, was represented by its chairman, Minkaila Salam.

The agreement comes just weeks after prolonged power outages across Katsina and 16 other northern states left residents grappling with blackouts, forcing many to rely on alternative sources to power essential devices.

Speaking after the signing, Governor Radda said the partnership aims to deliver reliable renewable energy to local communities and serve as a model for future hydroelectric projects. A pilot scheme at Danja Dam will power irrigation systems, water treatment plants, small enterprises, and households.

“We also plan to establish a mini hydroelectric power station as part of this initiative,” Radda said.

The project aligns with Nigeria’s Electricity Act of 2023, which promotes decentralised energy solutions and renewable integration into the national grid. It also supports the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 7 on affordable and clean energy.

In addition, Governor Radda announced plans to revive the state’s 10MW Wind Farm in Lambar Rimi, inactive for nearly 20 years. Talks with original equipment manufacturers Vergnet Groupe are underway in Paris to restore operations.

Ocean Solutions Energie specialises in co-developing renewable energy projects across Africa. The Katsina government hopes this partnership will transform energy access while unlocking the potential of the state’s 43 dams for future hydroelectric projects.
