- The Arewa Think Tank supports President Tinubu’s tax reform, viewing it as an opportunity for the North to innovate and harness resources
- Despite opposition from Northern leaders, ATT emphasizes the need for collaboration with the federal government to manage mineral resources effectively
Arewa Think Tank (ATT), a prominent Northern group, has highlighted President Bola Tinubu’s administration’s recent tax reform proposal as a chance for the North to embrace creativity and innovation.
The group believes this reform could enable the region to harness its mineral resources for the benefit of its people.
However, the reform has faced strong resistance from key Northern leaders. Northern governors, traditional rulers, and the Northern Elders Forum opposed the bills, arguing that they don’t serve the nation’s or region’s interests. Borno State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum also criticized the reform, claiming it would hinder Northern development.
Despite these objections, ATT disagrees with Zulum’s stance. According to its convener, Muhammad Alhaji Yakubu, the reform represents a unique opportunity for the North.
He emphasized the region’s need to collaborate with the federal government and push for constitutional amendments that allow states to manage their mineral resources independently.
Yakubu stated, “The tax reform is a great opportunity for the North to innovate and engage with lawmakers to drive development.”
The proposed tax bills, introduced by President Tinubu in September, have sparked debates nationwide. Although stakeholders, particularly in the North, have called for their withdrawal, the Senate recently passed the bills for a second reading despite tense deliberations.
ATT expressed optimism about the reform’s swift progress through the legislative stages. “This smooth passage shows the potential fortunes these bills hold,” Yakubu said.
He dismissed concerns that the reform would harm the North, arguing that its benefits outweigh potential drawbacks.
He further urged Northern leaders to support the reform, emphasizing its long-term benefits for future generations. “Rejecting these reforms is a disservice to the North’s progress. We appeal to our leaders to act patriotically and back this initiative.”
The group also called on President Tinubu and lawmakers to remain steadfast in advancing the legislation, ignoring opposition that could stall its implementation. According to ATT, the reform can potentially transform the North and the entire nation.
