  • The tax reform bills passed a second reading in the Senate on November 28.
  • The bills have faced stiff resistance from different quarters especially from elites in northern Nigeria.

Aminu Tambuwal, a senator representing Sokoto south, has condemned President Bola Tinubu’s proposed tax reform bill, citing its poor timing.

Tambuwal expressed his concerns on Sunday while distributing relief materials to flood victims in his senatorial district.

Speaking at the event, Tambuwal stated, “Let me use the opportunity of this platform to address the issue that is raging for now, the issue of tax reform as presented by President Bola Tinubu.”

“I believe this is a wrong time for any upward review of either VAT or any form of tax, the time is inauspicious, the time is very wrong.”

Tambuwal emphasised that Nigerians are facing hard times, and the government should focus on alleviating their suffering rather than increasing their hardship.

He noted that the recent devaluation of the naira and removal of fuel subsidy have exacerbated the hardship, and the government should prioritize managing this hardship.

Tambuwal also cited statistics from the Nigerian Bureau of Statistics, which show that over 30 million Nigerians are living in abject poverty.

The senator’s comments came as he distributed relief materials to over a thousand households affected by flooding and other natural disasters in Shagari.

In Bodinga, Tambuwal partnered with the National Directorate of Employment to provide skills training to over 1,000 youths in various fields.
