56 die in stampede during football match

  • Matters escalated while police were trying to douse the tension and commotion with teargas during the melee

At least 56 people have reportedly died during a stampede at a football match in the city of Nzerekore, Guinea.

The stampede followed the invasion of the pitch by rivals in protest of the referee’s penalty decision during the final of a local tournament in Nzerekore on Sunday.

Matters escalated while police were trying to douse the tension and commotion with teargas during the melee, local government said in a statement on Monday.

According to the statement, the government stated that investigation into the incident with a view to finding its masterminds has begun.

The government also promised to care for the injured with all the provisions,

The country’s prime minister, Amadou Oury Bah, in a post on his X account, appealed for calmn so that hospital services are not hindered in providing first aid to the injured.

“The regional authorities are working to restore calm and serenity among the population. The government is monitoring the development of the situation and reiterates its call for calm so that hospital services are not hindered in providing first aid to the injured.

“The moral authorities of the city are requested to also contribute to the restoration of social tranquillity,” he tweeted
