- The NNPP leader said this is not the right time to review or introduce a new tax because of the economic crisis in the nation.
The 2023 New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) presidential candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, has urged President Bola Tinubu to withdraw the contentious tax reform bill.
Kwankwaso made the plea, stating, “You should reconsider your dogged stance on the Tax Reform Bills in the interest of Nigerians, so that the country will go out of it once and for all.”
He emphasised that Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan had withdrawn critical bills in the past, and Tinubu should consider doing the same for Nigeria’s benefit.
Kwankwaso expressed his stance on tax reform, saying, “Now is not the right time to review VAT or introduce new taxes, given the economic challenges many Nigerians face.”
He stressed that the government should prioritize providing relief and support to the people, rather than imposing additional financial burdens.
Kwankwaso urged President Tinubu to heed the counsel of the National Economic Council and other respected voices of wisdom, ensuring decisions are guided by the common good.
He noted that withdrawing the bills would not be unprecedented, as former presidents had made similar decisions to benefit the nation.
In conclusion, Kwankwaso respectfully urged President Tinubu to reconsider his stance on the bills and ensure that the voices of the majority of Nigerians are heard and respected.
