- The Coalition of Patriotic Democrats urges Nigeria’s opposition to embrace constructive criticism to enhance governance and foster national development
- National Coordinator Ako Atuloma emphasizes that meaningful engagement, rather than confrontation, is essential for unity and progress in Nigeria
The Coalition of Patriotic Democrats (CPD) has called on Nigeria’s political opposition to adopt constructive criticism instead of aggressive tactics. The group emphasized that positive engagement would strengthen governance and advance national development.
Speaking at the inauguration of the CPD’s new national executive in Abuja, Ako Atuloma, the National Coordinator and Chairman of the Board of Trustees, highlighted the need for opposition parties to play a patriotic role.
“Opposition should not mean attacking the government at every opportunity,” Atuloma stated. “It should focus on offering meaningful and patriotic suggestions.
Constructive criticism supports democracy and drives progress, while antagonistic behaviour causes division and stalls development.”
Atuloma expressed concern over the rising trend of post-election disputes and resistance to government initiatives, describing them as barriers to unity and national growth.
He urged opposition leaders to accept election results and prioritize governance for the nation’s benefit.
Citing former President Goodluck Jonathan as an example of patriotic leadership, Atuloma praised his cooperation with his successor despite losing the 2015 elections.
Jonathan’s approach, Atuloma said, demonstrated how constructive engagement could foster democracy and national stability.
Acknowledging the hardships faced by Nigerians, including high living costs and insecurity, Atuloma encouraged both opposition leaders and citizens to address these challenges through productive dialogue and collaboration.
The CPD’s message calls for unity and a shift toward solution-oriented political engagement to achieve sustainable national progress.
