The Federal Government has announced plans to implement a comprehensive health maintenance package for both serving and retired Armed Forces personnel and their families.
The Minister of Defence, Abubakar Badaru, revealed the initiative on Wednesday during the 12th Stakeholders’ Meeting 2024 in Abuja, which focused on improving healthcare delivery for the military.
Speaking through the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Ibrahim Kana, Mr Badaru highlighted the importance of supporting frontline troops deployed to defend the country against external threats.
He acknowledged progress made by Defence Health Maintenance Limited (DHML), the Health Maintenance Organisation for the Armed Forces, while also addressing the challenges the agency faces.
“We have promised all personnel, both serving and retired, adequate medical care for them and their families,” Mr Badaru said. “This organisation provides financial cover for our personnel and has offices across the country. We are reviewing our progress, identifying challenges, and charting the way forward.”
Mr Badaru stressed the government’s commitment to ensuring that military personnel receive the best medical care, allowing them to serve the nation effectively.
Rear Admiral AB Afolayan, the Managing Director of DHML, also reiterated the agency’s dedication to delivering adequate healthcare across all military formations. He encouraged officers to take advantage of available health services.
The event, themed “Defence Health Maintenance Limited in Sustaining Healthcare Delivery in the Armed Forces of Nigeria,” brought together key stakeholders to deliberate on enhancing medical services for military personnel and their families.
