- Odutola attributed the high rate of missing girls and ritual killings involving females in the state to the disturbing hookup trend.
The Nigerian police force has asserted that the rise in the case of missing girls is not unconnected to the rampant culture of “hookups”.
The Public Relations Officer for the Ogun State Police Command, Omolola Odutola made the assertion during an interview with Channels TV on Monday.
Hookup is an euphemism for brief, casual, transactional sexual relations between individuals of opposite sex.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Morning Brief on Wednesday, Odutola attributed the high rate of missing girls and ritual killings involving females in the state to the disturbing hookup trend.
She asserted that hookup culture is a serious socio-economic issue affecting young girls as it put them in a situation where they are forced to go to previously unknown places to meet unfamiliar and strange people.
“Today, we have lots of reports of missing persons. By the time we start an investigation, not less than 10 young girls and ladies go missing daily.
“In-depth investigations also reveal that those cases are not by accidents. Most of them are connected to hookup channels and apps.
“They fall victim to strangers who causally invite them to unknown places, and eventually fall victim to being used for ritual purposes,” said Odutola.
The PPRO emphasized that Ogun State has a troubling history with these cases.
In September, police had launched a manhunt for the murderers of Habibat Akinsanya, a 17-year-old secondary school student who was abducted and killed in the state
