  • Recall that the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has condemned Farotimi’s arrest, saying it breaches the rule of law and the legal profession’s sanctity.

The Labour Party caucus in the house of representatives has urged the judiciary to maintain neutrality and impartiality in Dele Farotimi’s prosecution.

Farotimi, a human rights activist, was arrested by the Ekiti police command on Tuesday over alleged defamation and cyberbullying.

Prior to his arrest, Farotimi had raised concerns about plans to abduct him, following a petition filed by Afe Babalola, a senior advocate of Nigeria.

A magistrate court in Ekiti remanded Farotimi in prison custody until December 10, after arraigning him on a 16-count charge.

Since his arrest, prominent figures like Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar have called for his release on social media.

Omoyele Sowore, publisher of Sahara Reporters, has also urged Nigerians to join a nationwide protest on December 10 against the judiciary over Farotimi’s prosecution.

Victor Ogene, LP caucus leader, has asked the judiciary to remain impartial and uphold democratic principles.

Ogene stated that democracy is threatened when institutions are manipulated against citizens, adding that anti-democratic activities undermine Nigeria’s civil government.

The lawmaker expressed concern over Farotimi’s arrest, saying it sparked worries about eroding democratic principles and silencing dissenting voices.

“The judiciary remains the last bastion of hope for all citizens in a democratic society; as such, it is imperative that the judiciary upholds the principles of impartiality,” NAN quoted Ogene as saying.

Ogene emphasized that the judicial system must remain neutral, regardless of social status or connections.

“The Labour Party caucus is committed to upholding democracy, human rights, and the rule of law,” Ogene added.
