- Recall that on Wednesday, an explosion occurred along the Gusau-Dansadau road, killing eight people who were traveling to Gusau in a Volkswagen Golf car.
- According to Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency publication, suspected bandits were responsible for planting the explosives.
The Zamfara police command has identified members of the Lakurawa terrorist group as being responsible for the explosive device that detonated along the Gusau-Dansadau road in Maru LGA.
Muhammad Dalijan, the Zamfara police commissioner, made this disclosure during a Zoom interview on ‘Sunrise Daily’, a Channels Television programme, on Thursday.
However, speaking on the show, Dalijan said that militants from Lakurawa terrorist group were spotted near the blast site just moments before the deadly explosion occurred.
The police commissioner stated that the use of explosive devices is a new tactic in the north-west, adding that this level of sophistication was previously beyond the capabilities of bandits in Zamfara.
“This Lakurawa (group) when they were dislodged by the Army in Sokoto and Kebbi, the rest of them that survived the military onslaught were trying to find new enclaves,” Dalijan said.
“They planted a bomb under a bridge as they were passing through a village to Birnin-Gwari forest. Then a motorist stepped on it, causing the explosion that killed the driver and injured three others.
The police commissioner further stated that the militants were seen passing through a village, and as reports were being gathered, the explosion occurred.
“So, we are sure that they were the ones that planted the bomb.
“The bandits here (in Zamfara) don’t use bombs because they lack the knowledge to make or improvise explosive devices.
“So, we are 100% sure that they (Lakurawa) are the ones because planting bombs in Zamfara State is a new development and bandits don’t have that capacity.”
