- The federal government launches the 2024 Hazard Risk Analysis to enhance disaster preparedness and mitigation efforts across Nigeria
- Vice President Kashim Shettima emphasizes the importance of collaboration and proactive measures to protect citizens from ecological risks and disasters
The federal government has introduced the 2024 Hazard Risk Analysis to improve disaster preparedness and mitigation nationwide.
Vice President Kashim Shettima urged stakeholders to collaborate more effectively to tackle Nigeria’s disasters and climate change exposure.
During the launch event on Thursday in Abuja, Shettima emphasized the government’s dedication to protecting lives and livelihoods from ecological and other risks.
He stated, “This initiative shows our determination to address ecological challenges with well-informed strategies. We aim to shield citizens from risks while building infrastructure for disaster prevention and response.”
The analysis, created by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) with support from UNICEF, examines Nigeria’s vulnerability to hazards such as floods, droughts, and health emergencies.
It provides vital data for policymakers, emergency responders, and community leaders to improve early warnings and enhance risk management.
Shettima highlighted that understanding potential risks is essential for preparation, adding, “This document helps us shift from reacting to disasters to taking proactive measures.”
He also acknowledged recent challenges like severe floods and cholera outbreaks that displaced thousands across the country.
“Although we cannot prevent every disaster, we can reduce their impact by institutionalizing risk assessments and regularly monitoring vulnerabilities,” he added.
