The Ondo State Police Command has arrested Mohammed Shehu and Abubakar Umar in connection with the death of Alaba Abbey, Campaign Director for Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa during the recently concluded Ondo governorship election.
The suspects were apprehended by operatives of the Special Anti-Kidnapping Unit. Police spokesperson Funmilayo Odulami-Omisanya said they confessed to Abbey’s abduction at Supare Akoko, which resulted in his death.
The suspects also admitted to involvement in other crimes, including armed robbery and kidnapping in areas such as Kogi, Niger, and several parts of Ondo State.
According to Odulami-Omisanya, Shehu was stopped during a routine search at Ikare Junction on 14 November 2024. His behaviour raised suspicion, and further interrogation revealed incriminating evidence, including a voice note discussing plans for a kidnapping job.
Shehu’s confession led to the arrest of Umar, who also admitted to participating in similar crimes. The police stated that the gang’s modus operandi involved abducting victims from their homes and demanding ransoms.
Investigations are ongoing, and efforts are being made to apprehend other members of the gang.
