- He reiterated President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to participatory democracy
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has called for reforms in Nigeria’s tax administration system, citing design and implementation flaws as well as taxpayers’ attitudes.
Speaking at a National Discourse on Tax Reform Bills organised by the Kaduna Chapter of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) on Saturday, Idris emphasised the importance of constructive dialogue in addressing controversies surrounding the tax reform bills.
He reiterated President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to participatory democracy, assuring Nigerians that the administration would uphold democratic principles and inclusivity.
“In a democracy, constructive dialogue is essential for societal advancement. We may not always agree, but our shared humanity, nationhood, and patriotism unite us,” he said. “The Tinubu administration will never undermine the ideals of participatory democracy.”
The minister commended the NIPR for fostering conversations on tax reform and its role in national economic renaissance. Quoting Benjamin Franklin’s famous adage, he noted the inevitability of taxation and its critical role in governance.
The discourse highlighted the need for a collaborative approach to reform Nigeria’s tax system to enhance economic growth and public trust.
