The League of Northern Democrats (LND), led by former Kano State Governor Senator Ibrahim Shekarau, has established a committee to examine President Bola Tinubu’s four tax reform bills submitted to the National Assembly.

The proposed tax reforms have sparked widespread debate, particularly among northern leaders, who argue that the measures could further impoverish the region.

In response to the controversies, the LND announced the inauguration of a technical committee tasked with conducting a detailed clause-by-clause review of the proposed legislation.

In a statement on Friday, the group’s spokesman, Dr. Ladan Salihu, emphasized that the initiative aims to ensure that the laws reflect justice, equity, and prosperity for all Nigerians while safeguarding the developmental interests of the northern region.

“The committee, composed of dedicated Northern experts in law, public accounting, legislation, and academia, will spend one week to conclude a comprehensive review of the bills,” Salihu said.

The committee’s responsibilities include:

Upon completing its review, the committee will publicly present its findings in an electronic and tabular format to policymakers, legislators, the media, and the public.

Salihu expressed confidence in the committee’s ability to provide well-reasoned recommendations that balance sustainable development and equitable economic growth for all Nigerians.

“We urge Nigerians to stay tuned for LND’s public presentation, which will provide clear insights into the bills and our proposed policy position,” he added.

The committee’s review is expected to offer a comprehensive evaluation of the tax reforms and provide informed policy recommendations to ensure fairness and prosperity across the nation.
