The Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) has initiated free cleft lip surgeries for 200 patients nationwide, supported by the Qatar Charity Foundation.
This program aims to ease the suffering of vulnerable children, restore their dignity, and give them a chance at a normal life.
At the launch, Hamdi Abdou, the Country Director, highlighted the foundation’s global initiative, “Making a Smile.” He noted its success in providing cleft lip surgeries in Pakistan, Somalia, and Ghana. Abdou added, “We are now extending this initiative to Nigeria, aiming to transform the lives of around 200 children.”
He emphasized that the surgeries not only change the lives of the children but also positively affect their families and communities.
Beyond cleft surgeries, Qatar Charity has supported other medical interventions in Nigeria, including cataract surgeries, hospital construction, medical supply provision, and heart surgeries.
Abdou credited these achievements to the leadership of Qatar Charity in Nigeria and the support of Qatar’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Dr. Ali bin Ghanem Al-Hajri.
Professor Abdurahman Abba Sheshe, Chief Medical Director of AKTH, explained that the 200 surgeries will be completed within three months. The program covers surgery, feeding, and medication, ensuring no patient cost.
