The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has honored Olanike Nafisat Balogun for making history as its first female pilot.
In a statement issued on December 8, 2024, NCS spokesperson Abdullahi Maiwada commended Olanike for her dedication and ambition, which have contributed to her remarkable achievement.
Olanike’s journey with the NCS reportedly began in 2002, and over the years, she advanced her qualifications.
She obtained an Advanced Diploma in Air Ticketing and Cabin Services, a Master’s in Public Administration from Ahmadu Bello University, and a Pilot Certification from the Flying Academy in Miami, Florida—each with the support of the NCS.
Now serving as a Deputy Superintendent of Customs, Balogun is the first female pilot in the NCS Airwing.
Her achievement has positioned her as an inspiration for women within the service and beyond.
Reflecting on her path, she spoke about the challenges she faced, particularly the tough decision to remain in public service while others pursued more lucrative opportunities in the airline industry.
“Staying in the Service was tough, but I was determined to contribute to public service and fulfill my dream of becoming a pilot,” Olanike said.
“I hope my journey will motivate young Nigerians, especially women, to chase their dreams and overcome barriers,” she added.”
The Comptroller General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, also praised Balogun’s accomplishment, recognizing it as a testament to the NCS’s commitment to fostering talent and innovation.
“Her story exemplifies what is possible with determination and institutional support,” Adeniyi remarked.
