- Galadima condemned the attempts to suppress political rivalry and the alleged maneuvers by the current administration to compromise the integrity of the democratic system.
Buba Galadima, a prominent New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) leader, has slammed George Akume’s statement as ridiculous for advising northerners with presidential aspirations to wait until 2031.
Galadima made these remarks during an interview on News Night, an Arise Television program, on Monday.
Recall that Akume said on Sunday that northerners eyeing the presidency in 2027 should allow President Bola Tinubu to complete a potential second term.
He also urged Atiku Abubakar, former vice president, to postpone his presidential ambitions until 2031.
In response, Galadima stated, “how people feel now in their body will determine the way they vote in 2027”.
Galadima refused to view Nigerian politics through a regional lens, emphasizing that leaders should be evaluated based on performance and promise-keeping.
Galadima condemned attempts to stifle political competition and alleged maneuvers by the current administration to undermine democratic integrity.
“I wouldn’t want to discuss Nigerian issues on the basis of north and south. I’m a nationalist,” he said. “What the people feel now will determine the way they vote in 2027. There’s a vacancy in 2027, contrary to Akume’s claims.”
Galadima emphasized that intimidation and manipulation won’t stop Nigerians from producing alternative presidential candidates.
“We know the APC government is offering billions to compromise party leaders, aligning them with their agenda to ensure no opposition candidate emerges in 2027.”
Despite this, Galadima expressed optimism about the democratic process, urging Nigerians to ensure electoral integrity.
“I’m happy Africans can change governments through the ballot box; we must stand up to ensure this happens, not just politicians.”
