- Over 18% of Nigerians face food shortages, with calls for farm settlements to enhance production and ensure security during crises
Prominent stakeholders have called on President Bola Tinubu to tackle Nigeria’s numerous challenges, ranging from division to food insecurity.
Speaking at the 9th edition of Effulgence 2024, organized by the Kings College, British American Institute, in Abuja, the Vice Chancellor of the British American Open University, California, Prof. David Bruce Day, highlighted division as Nigeria’s most significant issue.
“Nigeria’s biggest problem is division—it’s a shame. But we can change this,” Prof. Day said.
He emphasized Nigeria’s potential to become a global superpower if its citizens unite and believe in their collective destiny.
He also stated that President Tinubu is not to blame for the current challenges, encouraging Nigerians to remain optimistic about the future.
Dr. Otis Orji, the university’s Country Director, lamented the country’s food insecurity, poverty, and corruption. He noted that over 18% of Nigerians face food shortages, leading to extreme hunger and the risk of rising mortality rates.
“Nigeria lacks food security, and poverty and corruption remain rampant,” Dr. Orji said. He recommended the establishment of farm settlements with military barracks to enhance food production and ensure security.
He hoped that the current administration, operating under the “renewed hope” slogan, would prioritize addressing food insecurity.
Resident Pastor of Living Faith Church, Pastor Israel Olajumoke, also expressed concern about the nation’s challenges, criticizing the gap between campaign promises and their implementation.
“Political manifestos are long during campaigns but short in execution,” Pastor Olajumoke said.
The stakeholders collectively urged the government to act swiftly and effectively to restore hope and address Nigeria’s pressing issues.
