Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State has revealed that he inherited a state where 70% of the youth is idle.
He made this statement during an interview on Channels TV’s Politics Today on Tuesday, highlighting his administration’s challenges upon assuming office.
The governor, however, emphasized that significant progress is being made in addressing the state’s challenges. He noted security improvements achieved through coordinated efforts with security agencies to combat banditry.
“Zamfara is blessed with abundant natural resources,” Governor Lawal said, “but the question is, to whose benefit? The state’s population is about six million, and 70% are young people without engagement. This is the situation I inherited.”
Lawal pointed out that while Zamfara has battled insecurity for over a decade, recent education, healthcare, and agriculture developments indicate positive change.
No Rush to Negotiate with Bandits
When asked about his stance on negotiating with bandits, the governor reiterated his firm position against it. Unlike Kaduna State, which has engaged in negotiations, Lawal stated that any talks with bandits must be approached strategically and holistically.
“I have always maintained my stance. I will not negotiate with bandits unless it is done from a position of strength,” he said. “Negotiation should not come from weakness. If these individuals are serious, laying down their arms would show a commitment to peace.”
