Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has criticized the economic policies of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, accusing the administration of causing widespread hunger, poverty, and unemployment across Nigeria.
In a statement issued by his Executive Assistant on New Media, Felix Ofou, Oborevwori condemned the removal of the petroleum subsidy and the naira’s floating exchange rate.
He argued that inflation and the naira’s devaluation had overshadowed the intended benefits of subsidy removal.
The governor’s remarks came in response to claims made by Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, a former Deputy Senate President, during an APC event.
Omo-Agege had praised Tinubu’s policies, citing increased federal allocations to states and local governments, higher export revenues, and improved incomes for farmers.
He also accused Oborevwori of mismanaging the funds received by Delta State, amounting to over ₦900 billion in 18 months, with little to show in development.
Oborevwori refuted Omo-Agege’s claims, emphasizing that inflation and the naira’s depreciation had eroded the value of increased federal allocations.
“Can we genuinely speak of increased funds in any state when inflation is skyrocketing, the naira is devalued, and factories are shutting down daily? Over 130 million Nigerians are now living below the poverty line,” Oborevwori stated.
He cited reports from the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which criticized Tinubu’s policies as ineffective, branding Nigeria as the “poverty capital of the world.”
The governor also criticized Omo-Agege’s suggestion that Delta emulates APC’s economic policies.
“Why would anyone recommend policies that have intensified economic hardship? This model is unsuitable for Delta State and does not reflect the aspirations of our people,” Oborevwori said.
He called for caution in adopting measures that exacerbate poverty and suffering, urging leaders to prioritize solutions that uplift the masses.
Oborevwori concluded by reaffirming his commitment to protecting the welfare of Delta residents while addressing the economic challenges they face.
